What Does a GPS Fish Finder Do?
It doesn’t find fish. At least, the GPS fish finder part of it doesn’t. I mean, it finds fish, but not with the GPS. Which is why my knickers are in a knot! I thought it would find the fish.
I’ve seen the videos, and I know they can read your license plate number with GPS. They can tell which brand of cigarette you are smoking, or if you’re smoking something besides tobacco. At least that’s what they claim on the paranoia web sites.
So, I naturally assumed the satellites up there could find the fish for you. And I figured they’d be decent sized fish, too. I mean, I know they probably can’t find minnows. But a sturgeon. A GPS fish finder should be able to find a sturgeon, right?
Well, a GPS fish finder uses sonar to find fish, just like a regular fish finder. The GPS part is totally extraneous to the fish finder function. And, as it turns out, the satellites that can see what you are smoking are spy satellites, not GPS satellites.
Location, Location, Location
So, what does a GPS fish finder do? It tells you where you are. That’s it. Nothing else. It just gives you your exact location. Well, you can mark locations, too, and it will give you directions from one location to another. That’s kind of handy.
How is that handy, you ask? Well, once you find that sturgeon, you can mark its location with the GPS fish finder, so that you can find your way back to the same place again. Maybe there will be another sturgeon there.
It’s also handy if you get lost. You know, when you get out in the middle of a big lake, all the bays and coves look pretty much the same. And if you’re a bit directionally challenged, you can get lost. And once you get lost on a lake, the only thing to do is head toward shore and circle the lake until you find something that looks familiar. Or get tired or run out of gas. And then you just float there until someone finds you.
If you have a GPS fish finder, though, you can mark the dock when you leave it, and then you can easily find your way back home.
I guess a GPS fish finder has its uses after all. Even if it can’t find the dang fish without sonar.
